Your Team Doesn’t Need More Meetings. They Need More Conversations.

This is how a 20-minute meeting changed everything for me.

While no doubt, group meetings serve a purpose to share updates, set priorities, and ensure that everyone hears the same message, they can easily become ineffective.

When it comes to performance improvement, one-on-one meetings are the real difference makers where leadership actually happens.

Years ago, I sat down with a salesperson for a quick 20-minute one-on-one. By the end, I learned things I’d never hear in a team meeting in terms of what was holding him back, what motivated him, and how he could sell more cars while feeling confident doing it.

That’s when it hit me: most progress doesn’t happen in meetings; it happens in conversations and I became a firm believer that one-on-one meetings work, since:

 🟢 They provide personal attention.
🟢 You can have honest dialogue since people speak more freely in private.
🟢 You can express clear accountability expectations without distractions.
🟢 You can tailor specific coaching to their needs.
🟢 You can tackle small issues before they escalate.

Group meetings are necessary, but they rarely uncover the insights that move the business forward. A single one-on-one can unlock more potential than an hour-long team huddle ever could.

So, the question is, when was the last time you had a real one-on-one with someone on your team?
